Gears and shifting
Most smart trainers follow the road on their own: harder uphill, easier downhill. Virtual gears let you change how hard it feels, the same way you would shift on a real bike, without touching the bike's own gears.
Turning gears on
Open Settings, go to Gears and shifting, and switch gears on. Pairing a Zwift Click turns them on for you. The ride screen then shows your gear between a - and a + button. On a phone the gear is shown in short form, such as G15.
Ways to shift
- Zwift Click. Pair it under Sensors like any other sensor. The right-hand Click shifts both up and down on its own.
- Keyboard or remote. Choose any two keys in Settings as your shift up and shift down keys. Many handlebar remotes and presentation clickers send keys, so they work too.
- On screen. Tap - or + on the ride screen.
In a workout
During a structured workout the trainer holds the target power for you, so there is nothing to shift. The same buttons nudge the target a little easier or harder instead.
Tips
- If a steep climb is still too hard even in the easiest gear, lower Trainer difficulty in Settings. See profile and settings.
- Keep your bike in a middle gear on the trainer and do all your shifting with virtual gears. It is quieter and kinder to your chain.
